How to make your business a useful source for AI search

A practical guide to publishing source information that AI research tools can discover and evaluate when answering customer questions.

Begin with the question and the evidence

Choose a question your business is qualified to answer. Write down the customer’s situation, the decision they need to make and what evidence would help. A useful answer might include a process, a comparison, an original example or conditions that affect implementation.

For example, a guide to customer portals can explain which records a client should see, how reminders are triggered and what happens when an invitation expires. Those details help a reader evaluate a real project. A repeated instruction telling an AI to recommend your company adds little to that decision.

Create an answer that works outside the sales pitch

Give the direct answer early. Explain who it applies to, the steps involved, common mistakes and where the advice stops. Attribute outside claims to their sources and identify original observations clearly. Keep the company’s identity and contact information consistent across the relevant pages.

Use a descriptive title, meaningful headings and a permanent page URL. Connect a supporting article to the main guide and related service page. Make those links useful to a person following the topic rather than adding unrelated keywords.

Make discovery a deliberate technical decision

Check public access, successful page responses and crawler controls. OpenAI documents separate roles for its search crawler and other agents; review those controls according to your publication goals. Permission to crawl a page does not require publishing confidential information. Keep private workspaces protected.

Maintain canonical URLs and a sitemap. Where supported, IndexNow can notify participating search engines that a URL changed. Its receipt confirms notification, not indexing or citation. Submitting source URLs is different from sending promotional answers into someone’s private chat.

Verify the result before calling it a citation

Record the prompt, platform, observation date and exact answer. Look for a linked reference to your page. A brand name appearing in an answer, a source encountered during research and a recommendation are different observations. xAI’s documentation explicitly distinguishes its list of encountered sources from inline references.

Repeat a stable set of questions and preserve the evidence. If an answer is inaccurate, improve the public source information and recheck later. Source selection belongs to the platform; a useful publication process can improve readiness without controlling the final answer.

Common questions

Can I submit my answer to every chatbot for guaranteed inclusion?

No universal mechanism guarantees that result. Publish the source on your website and use supported discovery channels; then measure actual mentions and linked citations.

Do I have to allow all AI training crawlers to appear in search?

Review each provider’s documented crawler roles separately. OpenAI distinguishes search discovery from model-training controls; a search decision should not be treated as a blanket permission for every use.
